Yogyakarta, May 22, 2026 — Students from the Faculty of Law carried out a mangrove planting and beach clean-up activity as a form of environmental awareness and a concrete implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The activity took place in Pantai Baros area and involved 170 students, lecturers, and local communities.
The program began with a beach cleanup campaign aimed at reducing pollution caused by plastic waste and other debris along the coastline. Participants worked together to collect and sort waste scattered across the beach in order to create a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable coastal environment.
Following the cleanup activity, the students planted hundreds of mangrove seedlings in coastal areas affected by erosion and environmental degradation. Mangrove planting is considered an important effort to preserve coastal ecosystems, prevent abrasion, and provide habitats for marine life. In addition, mangroves play a significant role in absorbing carbon emissions and mitigating the impacts of climate change.
The supervising lecturer, Dr. Poerwanti Hadi Pratiwi, stated that the activity reflected the students’ commitment to environmental sustainability, especially on the Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) course – “as law students, we are not only expected to understand legal theories and regulations, but also to participate directly in real actions that support environmental protection and sustainable development”. The activity aligns with several SDGs objectives, including: SDG 13 – Climate Action, through climate change mitigation efforts; SDG 14 – Life Below Water, by protecting coastal and marine ecosystems; SDG 15 – Life on Land, through mangrove ecosystem conservation; and SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals, through collaboration between universities and local communities.
Besides benefiting the environment, the activity also helped raise awareness among young people about the importance of protecting nature and maintaining ecological sustainability. Through this mangrove planting and beach cleanup program, the students of the Faculty of Law demonstrated that the implementation of the SDGs is not merely a theoretical concept discussed in classrooms, but a real commitment realized through concrete actions that positively impact both society and the environment.
